Setting up a 4 line phone system through a telephone company can be an expensive process because you have a limited choice of a few overpriced systems to choose from. However, it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Here we’ve laid out some steps that will help you install the right 4 line phone system for you in no time.
- Purchase the right system
There are several types of 4 line systems you can go with. These systems vary based on features like the number of stations they can expand to, whether they are wall mountable, if they play background music when someone is on hold, and the number of languages that can be displayed in the menu.
- Install your phone lines
Once you have purchased the right phone system for your needs, you’ll need to ask your phone company to install the number of phone lines you need. They will install these lines to your main phone board, which is in a phone cabinet or phone room outside your building.
- Add phone jacks
Once all your lines have been installed, you’ll need to add phone jacks to each room or area where you want to set up your phones. You can have your local phone company come in for jack installation or you can hire an independent technician or installation group to install your phone jacks.
Make sure to ask your installer to add two lines on each jack because 4 line phone devices have space only for two phone cables to be connected to them. You’ll also save yourself a lot of money since you will reduce the number of cables you need to purchase by half!
- Connect your phones
This is the easiest step to installing your 4 line phone system. All you have to do is connect each phone to each phone line and to a power outlet.
NOTE: If your phone jack doesn’t already combine two lines, as suggested in the previous step, then you’ll need a line coupler to do so.
- Set up the features
Finally, you will need to program the features onto each of your phones. All you need to do is follow your phone manual to get the features you want on each device and you’ll have a fully operational 4 line phone system in place!
BONUS TIP
Ask your phone company to set up call rotation or roll over group or line hunting on your lines. This is a useful feature to have if someone calls your main line and it’s in use. In that case, the call will be automatically forwarded to the second line, and if that’s busy too, then to the next available line. This way you can advertise one phone number but make use of having multiple lines.
